What to do in Castiglione della Pescaia and the Maremma

From the apartment you can reach beaches, nature reserves, old villages and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago in a day. These are the places we recommend, from nearest to furthest.

• Aragonese Castle and old town Castiglione

  The old town climbs up to the 12th-century castle through lanes and walls, with views over the sea. Below it, Piazza Baccarini has cafés and small shops.

• Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve Castiglione

  A protected wetland with herons, flamingos and migrating birds. You can visit on foot or by boat, ideally at sunset.

• Beaches: Cala Violina and Rocchette Castiglione

  From the beach below the flat to Cala Violina and Spiaggia delle Rocchette: pale sand and clear water, among the best-known beaches in Tuscany.

• Punta Ala ~15 km

  An elegant marina, long sandy beaches backed by pine woods and an 18-hole golf course overlooking the sea.

• Follonica ~20 km

  A wide sandy beach on the gulf, a lively promenade and the MAGMA cast-iron art museum in the former foundry. Easy to reach by train too.

• Grosseto ~22 km

  The Duomo di San Lorenzo and the imposing Medicean Walls in the historic centre of the Maremma's main town.

• Maremma Natural Park ~25 km

  Dunes, pine forests and unspoiled beaches like Marina di Alberese, among trails, wildlife and protected nature.

• Morellino di Scansano wine inland

  Wineries and tastings among the vineyards of the Maremma hills.

• Talamone ~45 km

  A fishing village below its fortress, with a bay popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, on the edge of the Maremma Park.

• Massa Marittima ~50 km

  A medieval town with the Cathedral of San Cerbone and the large Piazza Garibaldi.

• Orbetello and its lagoon ~55 km

  Orbetello sits on a strip of land between two lagoons. See the Spanish Mill and the WWF reserve, with pink flamingos, on the way to the Argentario.

• Monte Argentario ~65 km

  Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, turquoise coves like Cala del Gesso and scenic coastal roads. Ferries to Giglio Island leave from here.

• Giglio Island and Giannutri by boat

  Clear water, colourful harbours and good spots for snorkelling and diving. You can go and come back in a day.

• Saturnia hot springs ~75 km

  The natural travertine pools of the Cascate del Mulino, free and with warm sulphur water all year, plus spa resorts if you want a full day of it.

• Capalbio and the Tarot Garden ~80 km

  A walled village and the famous sculpture park by Niki de Saint Phalle inspired by the tarot cards.

• Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano ~95 km

  The tuff towns: Pitigliano the "little Jerusalem", the Etruscan sunken roads and medieval villages carved into the rock.
