Castiglione della Pescaia

Day trips from Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia is the perfect base for exploring the Maremma: sea, medieval villages, hot springs and islands are all within a day's reach. Here are the best destinations, sorted by distance, all tested by our guests.

Under half an hour

Punta Ala (15 km) with its marina and pine-backed beaches; Follonica (20 km) on its sandy gulf; Grosseto (25 minutes) with its cathedral and Medici Walls; and at sunset the Diaccia Botrona reserve, just outside town, to see the flamingos. Inland, the villages of Vetulonia, Buriano and Tirli.

About an hour

The Maremma Natural Park with trails from Alberese and the wild beach of Marina di Alberese; Talamone with its fortress over the sea; Massa Marittima with its beautiful Piazza Garibaldi and cathedral; Scarlino and the famous Cala Violina; Orbetello with its lagoon and WWF oasis.

For a full day

The Saturnia hot springs with the free pools of the Cascate del Mulino (75 km, set off early); the tuff towns — Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano — with their Etruscan sunken roads; Capalbio with Niki de Saint Phalle's Tarot Garden; Monte Argentario with Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.

By boat: Giglio and Giannutri

Ferries to Giglio Island and Giannutri leave from Porto Santo Stefano: turquoise waters, colourful villages and snorkelling. Alternatively, from Castiglione you can arrange private boat trips to Cala Violina and the islands. You'll find all the destinations on our Maremma page.
